What is Reiki?
Reiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki is broken down in Japanese as Rei which means “Universal Life” and Ki which means “energy.” Reiki is a subtle and effective technique using spiritually guided life force energy. Reiki is considered the energy that flows through all living things. Reiki practitioners believe that everyone has the ability to use their own healing energy and also bolster that energy in themselves to help others. It is believed that a person’s ki, or energy, should be nurtured to keep it strong and free flowing. When this happens, a person’s physical and mental state is in good health. When the energy becomes weak, or dulled, it can cause symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance. Reiki is believed to have been started with Mikao Usui, who is credited with discovering this root system. His findings and methods were taught down through several grandmasters of Reiki. The Usui System of Natural Healing is the most widely practiced form of Reiki. Practitioners are trained through a four level process where Masters pass on their knowledge to their students. In the final level, the practitioner becomes a Master themself. Reiki energy flows through the practitioner, out of the hands, and into the patient. The Reiki practitioner will move through specific standard Reiki hand positions beginning at the person's head or feet. A patient might feel a warming or tingling sensation during the session, or sometimes nothing but a calm relaxation. Reiki should be very pleasant, relaxing, and invigorating. Reiki is great for stress reduction, relaxation, and wellness. Reiki is not a cure for any disease or illness, but assists in allowing the body to focus on healing itself by calming stress. Reiki is a great complement to acupuncture and traditional medicine. Reiki helps meditative states, promotes personal awareness, enhances spiritual connection, fosters natural self healing, relaxes and reduces stress, balances energies in the body, and relieves pain and discomfort.
